Gearing up for Show Season

Posted by Cut Above Beef Club on March 18, 2012 at 4:05 PM

That time has come again for our member to gear up for their first show of the season. We will be attending a couple shows in North Carolina in March and April. Some of our members just bought new calves yesterday at Elmore Cattle Company's club calf sale, and others are using their cattle from last year.  On March 9th, We had a monthyl 4-H meeting where we practiced showmanship. Everyone brought their cattle together, and we worked on setting them up and walking them. Earlier this year, we elected new officers. Our 2012 4- H officers are:

President: Hunter Bruce

Vice President: Rachel Stevens

Secretary: Shelbi Tucker

Treasurer: Ricky Glass

We also have  a new 4-H leader, Carrie Elmore. She is excited about the upcoming year and hopes to see a successful show season for the Cut Above members.

Our next meeting is April 14th at the Cross Anchor Fire Departement at 9:00 AM. Visitors are always welcome!

State Fair is Getting Close

Posted by Cut Above Beef Club on October 16, 2011 at 8:55 PM

Hello everyone,

It has been a while since an update has been posted. We have recently held our monthly 4-H meeting. Our meeting was held at the Cross Anchor Fire Department. Old business included discussion of previous shows. Members told which show they favored and why. New business included State Fair, the Market Steer Project, and Record Books. Carrie discussed a possible trip to Clemson University's Beef Farm, Swine Farm, and Dairy Farm. A tentative date has been set for December 3rd. Because the rough draft for market steer record books are almost due, we discussed each page of the book and what was expected to be included. The final due date is November 18th. Hunter and Ricky presented their demonstration on the history of 4-H. A motion and second were given for the meeting to be adjourned.

Members: Keep working on getting steer buyers, it is not too late! In person visits are best!!

Updates!

Posted by Cut Above Beef Club on March 12, 2011 at 12:17 PM

Well we just adjourned our 2nd meeting of the year. We talked about upcoming events, and electing new officers. March 26th will be our first show of the year. We will be in Franklin, NC at the Mountain Classic Jackpot show. April 9th is Elmore Cattle Company's Annual Club Calf sale. We will be providing biscuits and gravy, in return for donations. Thank you to the moms who are willing to bring crock pots to keep the food warm. After the show in March and the Elmore's sale, we will see if we need to plan another showmanship clinic, or just hold a regular meeting in April. Later in the month, the WNC Spring Fling will take place. Don't forget to get your entry forms in! There is a group on facebook that has a link to the entry forms.

We elected new officers. The results are as follows:

President: Hunter Bruce

Vice President: Ricky Glass

Secretary: Rachel Stevens

Treasurer: Joseph Stevens

Youth Advisor: Carrie Elmore

SCLPA Meeting

Posted by Cut Above Beef Club on September 14, 2010 at 10:29 PM

Hello Everyone!

Our SC show season is about half way finished! So far we have competed at the SC Jr Beef Round Up, Laurens County Fair, York County Fair, Abbeville County Fair, and the NC Mountain State Fair. Some of you may be attending a show in Augusta, or you may have already (I'm not sure of the date). Congratulations to everyone for a job well done. This weekend we have the Spartanburg County Livestock Producer's Association monthly meeting. It will be held at the Elmore's barn We will be responsible for a segment of their meeting. We will be showing them what we are doing as a 4-H club / beef show team. Be prepared to show your heifer or steer just like it was a real show that you would win money at...even though you wont be winning any money. You can have a hamburger steak though! Anyways...Please have clean cattle and clean show clothes! If you think you might get dirty on the way over or unloading, bring a change of clothes! We have a bathroom in the barn. The meeting starts at 5:30, so we need everyone and their cattle at the Elmore's at 4:30. We want to have the trailers parked and cattle tied before the members of the association begin arriving. They may ask you questions about your animal, so brush up on your answers! If you are selling a steer, remember that these people could be prospective buyers. We look forward to seeing all of you and your shiny cows...I mean faces...on Saturday.

A couple more shows

Posted by Cut Above Beef Club on August 19, 2010 at 5:07 PM

I found a few shows in GA. A couple members have attended some of these shows, but I believe that some of the shows are new to the club. The last 2 have age limits that will cut out some older kids.

Gwinnett County Fair - this link will take you to the home page. At the bottom of the page you will find links to the entry form and rules. http://www.gwinnettcountyfair.com/

GA-Carolina State Fair -  this link is also the home page. Scroll down and you will find a livestock link. Click on "livestock" and you will find rules and entry forms. http://www.georgiacarolinastatefair.com/common/content.asp?PAGE=112

Annual Moo Moo Classic - this might be exculsive for GA kids only. Here is the entry form.

GA National Fair - I believe this show has a Jr. Invitational show and a regular Jr show. The invitational show conflicts with the Piedmont Interstate show.  http://www.georgianationalfair.com/_fairresults/pdf-files/10%20Jr%20Invitational%20Rule%20Book.pdf

SC Jr. Beef Round Up

Posted by Cut Above Beef Club on June 29, 2010 at 3:32 PM

Just wanted to remind everyone of the upcoming deadline for the SC Jr. Beef Round Up. Entry forms are due by July 20. That is less than a month away. Please remember that even if you do not plan to show an animal, you can still participate in other activites. So be sure to bring the whole family! For those of you who are planning to show a heifer or steer, keep working hard! We hope you are rinsing your animal daily, along with combing and blowing. Be sure to walk it outside of its pen with a show halter and stick many weeks in advance. Even though all you kids love the summer warmth...the cattle dont! Make sure that fresh water and shade are available to them at all times, and a fan would be great too!

The entry form and handbook can be found at http://www.clemson.edu/extension/livestock/livestock/beef/junior_beef/index.html
